Abstract

Based on materials from the multimedia archive of the Central University of Tibetan Studies (CUTS, Varanasi, India), the article discusses visual representations of the Tibetan refugee community in India. The visual sources reveal different aspects of the life of the Tibetan Diaspora as an interesting social and cultural phenomenon of global importance. The Tibetan community in exile has formed a complex internal structure. It actively manifests itself in the religious, cultural and political life of India and on international level. Their activities keep “the Tibetan Question” on the global agenda. Many aspects of the dynamic life of the Tibetan Diaspora are reflected in the video sources that are the subject of our investigation. Materials of CUTS’s multimedia archive are interesting for research because they give insight into important events in the life of Tibetans in India, and they are an important source of information for any in-depth study of the exile community as a socio-cultural phenomenon. As a result of the joint project, CUTS’s video archive was transferred to the Institute of Mongol, Buddhist and Tibetan Studies of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Ulan-Ude), where considerable technical and research work on the video sources has been conducted, including their conversion into up-to-date digital formats, a meta-description and their digital publication. The article discusses the main approaches used for the creation of a digital database. The meta-description of video sources employs a system of tags according to the genres and contents of the multimedia documents. The article presents the main results of the work, including quantitative indicators showing the genre and thematic diversity.
