Abstract
I. Gandhi continued Nehru's policy directed at the country's development, at the basis of which were allegiance to democracy and secularism, relying on the own forces on the basis of a mixed economy. As a charismatic leader she widely used populist, including socialist ones, slogans. I. Gandhi's government was carrying out a dynamic foreign policy. The ties with the USSR were being strengthened. A war with Pakistan in 1971 ended in India's victory and the formation of the state of Bangladesh; this has thoroughly changed the situation in South Asia. In 1974 I. Gandhi made a decision to carry out nuclear tests. She was prone to authoritarian rale. During the state of emergency declared by her outstanding oppositionists were arrested, a number of political parties and organizations were banned. As a result it led to the defeat of her party. However, in the 1980 elections I. Gandhi again came back to power and continuously led the country till her violent death.
