Abstract
In the XVI-XVIII cents the Crimean peninsula was part of the Ottoman Empire. In 1475 the Turks seized all the colonies of Genoa and the Byzantine Empire in the Crimea. The Ottomans left the inner steppe part of the Crimean peninsula to the Crimean khan by the right of vassal independence, but a small strip of land along the Black sea - the southern coast of the Crimea and the Kerch peninsula - became the sultan's territory. The Ottomans renamed Genoese Kaffa as Kefeh and made it the capital of the liva (sanjak) of the same name. The villages and lands were considered the sultan's property and were controlled by the State. A governor-general appointed by Istanbul was at Kefeh. The other large towns were the centers of kazas (kadylyks) and were ruled by kadis. The towns were fortified by fortresses; there was a garrison headed by a commandant in each one of them. But did the Crimea after submitting to the Ottoman Empire become part of the real Moslem world or, having conquered the Crimea did the Turks not change the way of life formed there and did the Crimean peninsula keep its former appearance? The answer to this question as well as the information about the political, demographic and economic situation in the region can be given by the materials in the Turkish and Russian archives.
