Abstract
The Buddhist philosophical anthropology has till now been known outside the specialists' community only in a fragmentary and a very simplified way. It can be explained first of all by the relatively late development of a historical-philosophical direction in Oriental studies, and in particular in Buddhist studies. The acquaintance with Buddhism by primary sources was mainly based on the texts more accessible owing to their simpler language. However, in these texts the Buddhist ideas were represented in an unsystematic way, and only in the form of conversations of the founder of the teaching (Buddha Shakyamuni) with his disciples and the neophytes. F.I. Shcherbatskoy's great merit is in that he was the first to use in the analysis of Buddhist philosophical texts a conception which tented to differentiate various levels in the world outlook systems - axiological, gnosiological and psychological ones, that is the conception of the Russian Academic neo-Kantianism.
