Abstract
The main subject of the creation of Russian artist A.A. Rubtsov (1884—1947), who had come to Tunis in 1914 and had lived in this country for 35 years, to the end of his life, became the nature, architecture and the types of Northern Africa. The Russian artist expressed his love for Magrib and the Arab life in his numerous works. Altogether during the first four years of his stay in the country he created more than 600 pictures and sketches and soon became one of the pillars of the Tunisian fine arts. In his motherland, which had developed his unique talent, he is still known only to a narrow circle of specialists. There has been “the Artistic association of Alexander Rubtsov” in France since 1980, whose task is to popularize his creative heritage (Zinin, 1999). It is impossible to count up the artist’s heritage exactly: it is dispersed all over the world. There is some information that it is about 3 thousand pictures, water-colours, portraits, mosaics and sketches. But there are also hundreds of hasty sketches, each containing 50-60 pages. Will they ever be published? Alexander Rubtsov’s pictures are exhibited in the museum of the Tunisian capital, in the “Carnavalet” and “Petit Palais” museums in Paris. Many of his pictures are in private collections in Tunis and in France. And only four Rubtsov’s early works are kept in his historical motherland in Sanct-Petersburg - in Hermitage and the Museum of the Academy of arts.
