Abstract

The source of information about the monarchical tradition in Bali is the “Babad Buleleng”. An English translation of this chronicle from the ancient Javan language was made by P.J. Worsley, 1972. In the large preface Worsley emphasizes the peculiarities of the genre of this work as a babad (chronicle) and considers this monument as a kind of document proving the legitimacy or the illegitimacy of monarchs’ rule. The “Babad Buleleng” traces the genealogy of the dynasty back to Qui Gusti Ngurakh Panji Sakti, the first ruler of Buleleng, a state in the north of Bali. Panji Sacti is a real historical personality His rule belongs to the second half of the XVII century and is marked by the conquest of territories in Bali and Eastern Java. It was exactly he who started the ruling clan of the principality of Den Bukit having obtained the legitimate right to the throne of Buleleng.
