Abstract

Drawing on the documents of Soviet and German high command, declassified NKVD orders, Crimean press of the period between 1941-1944 and recollections of former partisans and ordinary townspeople of the city of Simferopol’, the author analyzes the role of Crimean Tatars in ethno-political history of the Crimea under occupation. Defeats suffered by the Red Army in 1941 gave Tatars hope to throw off the domination yoke of Moscow. While Tatars made an attempt to rebuild their lost statehood within the framework of Hitler’s “New Order”, the Wehrmacht used Crimean Tatars’ nationalistic aspirations to pursue its own political and military goals. Widespread, albeit sometimes involuntary collaboration with the occupiers was the cause first of the confrontation with the Russian ethnic majority (and partisan movement) and then, after the Germans were ousted - of the deportation of the whole Tatar people from the Crimea.
