Abstract

This article is an attempt to reconstruct the famous "Book of Roadways and Kingdom", an Islamic geography written by Jayhni ain the tenth century, but now lost. References to and quotations from said treatise in other sources show that it was initially compiled by Samanid vizier Muhammad Jayhānī in the first half of the tenth century and was re-worked several decades later by Ahmad Jayhānī, a kinsman of the former. The treatise appears to have been lost in the Oashriq fairly soon, yet in Maghrib an abridged version written by Said Ibn Ghalib Jayhānī still circulated, so that the treatise was still known there as late as in the fourteenth century. The treatise was a large compilation containing information on various domains, yet Muhammad Jayhānī's work was not that of a mere compiler. On the contrary, Jayhānī apparently added much to the information supplied by his predecessors, and developed some concepts of Islamic geography.
