Abstract
On the long and complicated road of the development of relations between the state and Islam in Russia important was the role of the Code Comission in 1767-1768. During the sessions of this commission for the first time in Russia's history the situation of different religions was openly discussed and recommendations were worked out for meeting th religious needs of Russia' peoples in a close connection with their social and economic requirements. One of the important result of this was that a legislative foundation was laid for the recognition of Islam as a tolerated faith in the Russian state. Although literature about the history oft he Code Commission is quite rich, the problems of the interreligious relations, the situation of religions in the instructions and the activities of Moslem deputies have till now remained without due attention.
