Abstract
It is supposed in the article that the source of borrowings in the Mari language was not Chuvash, but a language in which the system of phonemes differed from the modern Chuvash system. It can be reconstructed as it at a junction of pre-Turkic and Chuvash phonetic systems, and the reliability of its reconstructing is confirmed by Mari borrowings. The question is with which of the actually certified languages the source of the Mari borrowings can be identified? The precursor of the Chuvash language is traditionally considered to be the language of the Volga Bulgars fixed in epitaphs in the 19 century. We have compared the systems of consonantism in the Mari borrowings and in the Volga Bulgar epitaphs. As a result of comparing the linguistic and archaeological materials it was discovered that the source language of the Mari borrowings was the precursor of the language of the Volga Bulgars' epitaphs. Thus it turns out that the study of the Mari borrowings gives a new rich material for the study of the Bulgar branch of Turkic languages.
