Abstract
Under Graeco-Roman rule, Egypt was inhabited by mixed population with different religious, ethnic and social background. This unique and complicated co-existence of Egyptians, Greeks, Romans and people of mixed origins in a situation of social inequality led to self-identity problems. While burial reflected the synthesis of Hellenic-Greek culture, it also helped to emphasize social, ethnic and religious self-presentation of the dead to both, society and eternity.
