Abstract
Traditional and religious ideas and ritual practices are analyzed in this article. There is a distinction between heaven and earth in mythology, which is personified by figures of one and indivisible God Zanakhari and the son of the earth Zatuva. Zatuva creates people and animals from the clay, and Zanakhari gives them a soul. After death the soul comes back to the God to be embodied again with a lapse of time. This mythologeme defined the idea of eternal circulation (tody) and metamorphosis of the soul. Spirits, both kind and harmful which define numerous ceremonies and rituals, are represented in beliefs of Malagasies. The main rituals are those connected with a cult of ancestors and astrological practices.
