Abstract
The article deals with the period of division of Japanese orthodoxy into two groups caused by the annexation of Japanese Orthodox Church by the American Metropolia (presently the Orthodox Church in America) in 1947, which was not recognized by the small part of the local residents of Russian origin who had obtained Soviet citizenship after the war. The author considers the character of the oppositional group and analyzes the dynamic of its confrontation tothe Japanese Church in the American jurisdiction. The Allied occupation made it impossible for the Soviet clergymen to arrive in Japan, so that were the Japanese priests expelled from the Japanese Church for the collaboration with the militaristic regime and misusing the Church property during the wartime who conducted the church services for the Soviet citizens. Thus the group in the Moscow jurisdiction became rather a shelter for the Japanese clergymen opposing the Japanese Church than an outpost of the Soviet influence in Japan. The confrontation resulted at the second half of 1960s in the question which of the two groups would become a basis for the new autonomous Church of Japan.
