Abstract

The paper examines the peculiarities of Standard Arabic in Mauritania as revealed by its use in texts published by the Mauritanian News Agency in 2009-2010. This topic is closely connected with the problem of regional Standard Arabic variants in every Arab country. From this point of view Mauritania, which is relatively unexplored in modern Arab studies, gives extremely rich lexical material for research showing a lot of unique regionalisms for the Maghreb and Mashriq regions. The results of the analysis lead to the conclusion that the Mauritanian regional variant that refl ects Maghrebi and Mashriqi norms at the same time differs greatly from all-Arabic language standards.
