Abstract
The paper deals with the logical nature of the concept "Ancient Orient" as it was constructed by two Russian scholars B.A. Turaev and V.V. Struve. "Ancient Orient" appears to be an idea of reason in the Kantian sense of the word, not an empirical concept. When it is constructed by historians, there is a conflict of two logics: the logic of necessary and sufficient conditions and the logic of prototype (logic of metaphor). Russian historians subordinated "Ancient Orient" to the idea of Weltgeschichte (world history). The difference, however, between Turaev and Strove lies in the fact that the latter also subordinated "Ancient Orient" to the idea of slave-owning system/formation.
