Abstract

The article examines the main stages of the expansion of Christianity over Madagascar as well as forms of the opposing Catholicism and Protestantism in Madagascar. The author analyzes the major types of Christian organizations: the so-called historic churches, the national Malagasy churches, organization of the ‘popular Christianity’, the new evangelism. All forms of Christianity in Madagascar encountered (faced) with traditional beliefs, customs, values, and engage with them in a complex interaction. This article contains two main conclusions. First, the development of new forms of religious experience is the perception of the Biblical ideas in the spirit of Malagasy traditions. Second, Madagascar in fact continues the anticolonial struggle for the approval of their cultural values in the sphere of religion.
