Abstract

The paper examines the milestones of Australia-France geopolitical and economic rivalry in the South Paciﬁc in the 20 ^thand 21 ^stcenturies. By the late 1990s pacesetting Canberra and ambitious Paris had been ﬁghting viciously over the spheres of interest in Oceania. Later, in the 2000s the interplay between Australia and France was based on their desire to run the monetary policy of the South Paciﬁc. Finally, in the 2010s Australia and France reached a balance adjusted by the global ﬁnancial crisis that had weakened the USA and strengthened China in the world in general and in Oceania in particular. Yet, the two South Paciﬁc challengers were still eager to fall into love-and-hate relations whenever incited by their diplomatic maneuvers.
